'As You Lay Sleeping' Inspiration

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

Here we are, a week away from the release date for 'As You Lay Sleeping' and so far I've received a lot of positive feedback for the book and I wanted to thank everyone who took the time out to review the ARC copy. For my last post on the background of this project, I wanted to talk inspiration. As an author, everything inspires me. It could be a song, conversation, or place that turns on the light bulb for my next project. in this instance, you might be familiar with the story that inspired me...

So far I’ve published a YA paranormal series, a standalone novel, and two contemporary NA romances. For this newest endeavor, I went in a different direction, a Young Adult Thriller. While contemplating the novel, one story really clung onto my mind: The Phantom of the Opera. This award winning musical is one of my favorite plays, novels, and movie of all time (ask my husband…), there are so many elements I wanted to pay homage to while creating my own spin on it.

For instance, most of the characters in ‘As You Lay Sleeping’, share the same first letters of their counterparts in the play, and I added an extra character from the novel into the mix. But overall, I tried to explore the “feel” the characters give me while I read or watch the different versions of Phantom which helped shape the characters.

And while the inspiration for the story came from Phantom, the settings came from my own experiences. While most imagine beaches with palm trees and surfers, most of my childhood trips to the beach were local New England ones. I set my novel in the fictional town of Chester Bay, Connecticut. While the town is fictional, I researched locations in real Connecticut communities to bring the settings more to life.

I hope while reading, these little details create a wonderfully vivid world for you to experience.
